Mr. Rahman noticed that Iqbal had stopped turning in homework.

The obvious response was disciplinary. Iqbal had been reliable for months. Now he was late, quiet and sometimes asleep in class.

After school, Mr. Rahman asked him to stay for a minute.

Iqbal immediately said, “I know, I’m sorry. I’ll do the work.”

Mr. Rahman said, “I want the work done eventually. But first I want to know if something changed.”

Something had. Iqbal’s mother had begun working night shifts, and he was caring for younger siblings in the evenings. He was sleeping badly and trying to hide how overwhelmed he felt.

Mr. Rahman did not promise to fix the family situation. He connected Iqbal with the school counselor, adjusted deadlines where possible and helped identify practical support.

Months later, Iqbal remembered one detail: the teacher had noticed a change without deciding the change meant laziness.

Human connection often begins with interpretation. We can see withdrawal, irritability or poor performance and choose a moral explanation. Or we can become curious.

Curiosity does not remove accountability. It gives us a better chance of responding to the actual problem.

Why it matters

Changes in behavior can have many causes. A caring check-in can reveal needs that punishment or criticism alone would miss.

Reflection

Is there someone whose recent behavior you have interpreted harshly? Could you ask what changed before deciding why? If you are struggling, is there a teacher, manager or mentor who might respond to an honest explanation?

A reason to stay

Being noticed is not the same as being judged. Sometimes one person’s curiosity can make support possible before a problem becomes larger.
