Amir had become quieter over several weeks. He stopped attending football practice and began giving away commitments with unusual finality: “You should take over the project. You’re better at it anyway.”
His friend Rafi noticed but kept hoping Amir would bring up whatever was wrong.
Finally, after Amir said he was tired of being a burden, Rafi asked, “When you say that, are you thinking about suicide?”
Amir looked shocked. Then relieved.
“Yes,” he said.
Rafi had feared the question would make things worse. Instead, it removed the need for Amir to introduce the subject himself. Rafi listened, asked whether Amir could stay safe, stayed with him, and helped contact urgent support and family.
Later Amir said the question had mattered because it was specific. People had asked, “Are you okay?” and he could easily answer yes. A direct question required a more honest choice.
Rafi also learned that asking was only the beginning. He was not responsible for handling the crisis alone. His role was to take the answer seriously and help connect Amir with people equipped to support him.
Sometimes care sounds gentle. Sometimes care sounds direct. In moments of danger, clarity can be a form of kindness.
Why it matters
Vague questions can be easy to dismiss when someone is in serious distress. A calm, direct question can open honest conversation and help determine whether urgent support is needed.
Reflection
If you are worried about someone, are you avoiding a direct question because you fear the answer? If someone asks you directly, can you treat the question as permission to tell the truth?
A reason to stay
You do not need to hint perfectly for someone to help you. If you can, say clearly that you are not safe. Clear information helps other people act.
Help
If you are thinking about suicide or feel you may not be able to stay safe, tell someone now. Stay with another person if possible and contact local emergency or crisis support. You deserve immediate, human help.
