For months, Keira told her therapist that she was “stressed.” The word was technically true and emotionally incomplete.
She described poor sleep, conflict at work and exhaustion. She did not mention the suicidal thoughts because she was afraid of what would happen if she said them out loud. She worried she would lose control over every decision. She worried her therapist would see her differently.
One afternoon, near the end of a session, Keira said, “There’s something I keep not telling you because I’m scared.”
Her therapist waited.
Keira told the truth.
The conversation became more serious, but it did not become chaotic. Her therapist asked questions about safety and helped her make a plan for immediate support. They discussed who else should know and what level of care was needed. Keira left with more support around her than she had arrived with.
She later described the disclosure as “opening a door I had been holding shut with my whole body.” The problems behind the door still existed. But she no longer had to spend energy hiding them from the people trying to help.
Honesty does not guarantee an easy process. It can lead to difficult conversations and urgent steps. But secrecy can make a dangerous crisis more private and more powerful.
Why it matters
People may hide suicidal thoughts because of fear, shame or uncertainty about what will happen next. This story emphasizes honest disclosure to a qualified professional or trusted person so safety can be assessed and support expanded.
Reflection
Is there something important you have minimized because you are afraid of the response? Could you begin with: “I’m scared to tell you this, but I need help staying safe”?
A reason to stay
You do not need to present your pain neatly. The truth can be the first useful piece of information that allows someone to help you more effectively.
Help
If you are thinking about suicide or feel you may not be able to stay safe, tell someone now. Stay with another person if possible and contact local emergency or crisis support. You deserve immediate, human help.
